New minister for South Uist and Benbecula Free Church
Rev Lachie Macdonald is set to become the new minister of South Uist and Benbecula Free Church, ending a four-year vacancy. Mr Macdonald has accepted a Home Missions Board (HMB) appointment for five-years, after finishing his studies at the Free Church College in Edinburgh. HMB helps support the South Uist and Benbecula congregation. Along with his wife Catherine-Joan (CJ) and 15-month-old daughter Isabella, the popular 33-year-old spent last summer undertaking a ministry placement on Uist. A date for ordination and induction will be set at the next meeting of the Western Isles Presbytery, subject to ordination trials. South Uist became vacant in 2009 when previous minister Rev Iain MacAskill accepted a call to Rosskeen.

Rev Daniel Paterson licensed for Free Church ministry
Rev Daniel Paterson, who recently completed his studies at the Free Church College, has been licensed for the Free Church ministry by the Edinburgh and Perth Presbytery. The 27-year-old is now available for a call to vacant congregations.

A special group from the Home Missions Board that encourages outreach projects is now inviting applications for grants over the summer. The Evangelism Support Group (ESG) has an annual budget of £4,000 and last year helped many congregations across Scotland with mission-minded work. Since 2005, almost half of the Free Church of Scotland’s congregations have benefited from small grants from the ESG Fund.

Over 300 youngsters will attend the Free Church Youth Camps programme over the summer holidays. The first camps (Kincraig 1 and Whithaugh) begin on Saturday (29 June), with the final camps (Kincraig 2 and North Uist 2) finishing on 3 August. There are still a small number of last-minute spaces still available: email Laura for more details camps@freechurchofscotland.org.uk

Please note, the cafe will be closed for the summer months, through July and August.

Opportunity to Serve
After many years administering the (Monthly) Record distribution in the congregation, Margaret MacKinnon has decided to step back from this role. We are very thankful for her work in this.
Distributing the Record is fairly straight forward – the magazine is delivered in bulk to one address in the congregation, and then the distributor makes sure everyone who wants a copy gets one. A quarterly bill should go out to with the magazines, asking people to pay for them through the collection plate. There is a list of people who receive the magazine, but no money is handled directly.
If you are interested in taking on this role, please speak to Gordon as soon as possible, so that we can arrange for the magazines to go to your address in time for the next edition.

Communion & Church Lunch

This morning we will be sharing communion during our worship.   If you are visitor, and in good standing with a congregation elsewhere, you are welcome to join us at the Lord’s Table.   Please come forward at the appropriate time.

After the service today, we have a congregational lunch – everyone is welcome to remain behind to continue our fellowship together.   Please lend a hand to clear away the chairs, and reorganise the church for lunch.

Evening Service

This evening at Broadford we will be looking at the office of “Deacon” in the church.   Two weeks ago we were thinking about the office of Elder.   These two themes are vital to the welfare of our congregation in the long term – as we urgently need men to be ready to take up these offices in the congregation.   Please make an extra effort to come along this evening, to the Broadford Village Hall.

Next Sunday

Gordon will be away next weekend, preaching at communion services in Plockton and Kyle.    The services in our congregation will be taken by Innes MacSween, from Ness, Isle of Lewis.   Innes is a candidate for the Free Church ministry, and has just finished his university degree.   He plans to take a year out to work with UCCF (the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship) as a relay worker doing campus ministry with students in Cambridge.

Morning Prayer Meeting

Please remember the Sunday morning prayer meeting at 10:30am in Sleat.   The elders have committed to meeting at this time, but others are always welcome to join us.
