Monthly Prayer Meeting

The mid-week meeting on Wednesday (21st August) will be our “monthly” prayer meeting.   The focus of the meeting will be the congregation’s work in Broadford.   The meeting will not be about looking horizontally (i.e. towards each other) to generate new ideas, critique what we currently do, or revise our plans.   Instead, we will spend much of the meeting in prayer vertically (i.e. towards God) for specific items to do with our Broadford work.   Please make this meeting a priority if you are able to.

Christianity Explored

After the schools go back we are planning to begin new Christianity Explored courses.   As Gordon is currently moderator of Presbytery (and therefore really has to attend every meeting) it is expected that the evening meeting will fall on a Thursday.   We can also run groups during the day, over morning coffee if that suits people better.   Please use the invitation cards to invite people to this, or contact Gordon if you would like to attend.

Sacrament of Baptism

The bible teaches that the children of believers are to be baptised.   It’s been a few years since we have had a baptism service in the congregation, but the Kirk Session will be meeting to arrange for this in the coming weeks.   Parents seeking baptism for their children should contact Gordon ASAP to arrange for this.   We will have a Kirk Session meeting for this purpose when Alasdair returns, after the 19th August.

Communion & Congregational Lunch

Unfortunately, Gordon’s cousin’s wedding falls the same weekend as our planned communion weekend in September (8th).   This makes it very difficult to have visiting preachers and preparatory services, so the communion will be rescheduled for 1st September.   As this is a fairly short notice change, our usual congregational lunch that weekend will be at the manse.

Anyone wishing to profess faith in Jesus Christ, and sit at the Lord’s Table for the first time, or join us from another congregation, should contact Gordon to arrange to meet with the Kirk Session.

We hope to have a visiting preacher, and preparatory services, at a communion “weekend” in November.

Training Courses

We have a small number of places for a Basic First Aid training course to be held Saturday 26th October, in Sleat.

There is also Christians Against Poverty money course training day in Glasgow, on Saturday 30th November.   We hope to run this course in Sabhal Mor Ostaig, with new students this year, and are doing so with help from Grace Community Church (Kyle).   Having our own trained volunteers would make running future events a lot easier.

If you are interested in attending either of these courses, please speak to Gordon.

Denominational News

Call for conscience clause in gay marriage bill

Conscience clauses similar to existing legislation for abortion should be introduced to the same-sex marriage bill in Scotland, the Free Church has said. In its response to the Scottish Parliament, the Free Church said the proposed legislation offered little protection for individuals who believe marriage is between one man and one woman. The denomination argued that the introduction of such a clause would “provide indisputable guidance” as well as avoiding the need to “establish precedents through the courts”. The deadline for responses to Holyrood is Friday 23 August.

New Porterbrook courses starting in October

The part-time mission-focussed Porterbrook course is now inviting applications. Aimed at Christians of all ages and stages who want to serve the Gospel well and can give a few hours a week to study, Porterbrook provides biblical, practical, contextual, affordable and flexible training. Led by church planter Rev Neil MacMillan, the Edinburgh group begins on 5 October, and it is hoped there will also be regional groups in Dundee and Inverness (led by Rev Calum MacMillan) starting around the same time.

2013 Ayr Bible Convention – 2 to 6 September

The annual Ayr Bible Convention takes place at the beginning of next month, with the usual excellent mix of speakers lined up. Beginning on Monday 2 September, the conference runs each weekday evening at Ayr Free Church, John Street, from 7.30pm. After each talk there will be refreshments as well as an opportunity to buy from the bookstall in the hall.

And Finally…

Hope & Faith School

This coming week, Rosemary Mumbi, of Hope & Faith Christian Community School will be visiting Skye.

Along with addressing next Sunday evening’s District Joint service, a number of other events are planned.     (The preacher at the service will be John Urquhart, but owning to Rosemary’s visit, we have opted to give time to hear of her work in Lusaka rather than holding a communion service this time.)

On Saturday, 24th, there will be a ceilidh/buffet in their honour at Sabhal Mor, old campus, starting at 6.30pm. Contributions toward the cold buffet will be welcome. Entry is free but there will be an opportunity to make a donation toward the work of the school.
